THE HISTORY OF
TENUN TERATAI
First Generation
Tenun Teratai Group stands as one of the most enduring Malay weaving collectives in Loloan Barat Village, Negara District, Jebrana Regency, Bali. Their tradition of producing distinctive Malay woven fabrics can be traced back to the 1960s, a period when weaving was an integral part of the daily lives of Loloan Barat residents. The villagers would typically weave in the comfort of their homes, often in traditional Malay-Bugis stilt houses, as a leisurely pursuit. Despite the time-consuming nature of the craft, weaving brought great joy and satisfaction to the community.
The weavers' initial products primarily consisted of sarongs and stagens. Given this long-standing history, the local community recognized these woven fabrics as the hallmark of Loloan. However, as time progressed, the practice of weaving gradually declined. Today, Tenun Teratai Group remains as the sole active weaving collective, carrying on this cherished tradition.
Second Generation
The artisans of Tenun Teratai group have shown great enthusiasm, carrying on the tradition into the second generation. The looms, which were previously limited to producing fabric with a width of 60 cm, have been modified to accommodate larger sizes. These looms, commonly known as ATBM (non-mechanical looms), have significantly enhanced production efficiency due to their larger dimensions. Currently, the woven fabric produced has a width of up to 120 cm. With the previous looms, it took 2-3 working days to complete one sarong. Using the new looms, the production time for one piece of woven fabric has been reduced to just one.
